Well they’re at it again. NetSol will put up parking page with their own adverts on your sub-domains that aren’t being used. Now it seems that unless you read the 59,000 word long EULA you wouldn’t even know about it and the fact that you can opt out.

This is an excerpt from their EULA:

You also agree that any domain name directory, sub-directory, file name or path (e.g.) that does not resolve to an active web page on your Web site being hosted by Network Solutions, may be used by Network Solutions to place a “parking” page, “under construction” page, or other temporary page that may include promotions and advertisements for, and links to, Network Solutions’ Web site, Network Solutions product and service offerings, third-party Web sites, third-party product and service offerings, and/or Internet search engines. You agree that Network Solutions may change the content and/or appearance of, or disable any of these temporary pages at any time, in its sole discretion, and without prior notice.

Edit: I came across this personally when looking at my position in the Google ranks. This site comes up before me and has an under construction page. You wouldn’t really know it was under construction except for a tiny little text box in the top right corner.
How loose you ask, how about a whooping 14,000 pages. These join the around staggering 30,000 pages of other various Windows Server and Client protocols. The additions to the MSDN can be found here. Microsoft said that it will be releasing the finished documentation in June.

The devil is in the details though, even though the documentation is public if Microsoft feels that the protocol is patented any commercial product wanting to implement the protocol will have to pay royalties. The bright side is that noncommercial open source software may implement the protocols without royalties. Many say this effort is from pressure from the EU but this is still a step in the right direction.

I just downloaded Safari 3.1 for Windows, yes downloaded not forced-updated, and my initial impressions are good. Apple has been catching crap over the way the have released Safari to Windows users through Apple Software Updater. While the name implies that it will only update software you’ve installed Apple decided to push out Safari with it as well, the kicker is that it is checked by default. Infoworld explains more.

Safari feels very fast opening pages. It’s got all the standard web browser features, tabbed browsing, rss feed reader, form auto-fill. I really like the built-in rss reader, it puts Firefox reader to shame. Screen shots will follow. Another big feature is the private browsing right out of the box in Firefox you need a plugin for that but Safari has this as a standard feature.

Update: It seems that Apple violates it’s on EULA with the new Safari for Windows. According to The Register Safari can only be installed on Apple hardware running Windows.

Screen shots of the Feed reader that I really like. The feature that I really like is the article length slider which adjusts the article length on the fly.

I think one of my favorites has to be Wubi, what this is an installer for Windows. What it does is allows a user to install/uninstall Ubuntu just like any other application, with no need to have another boot loader or separate partition. For those that prefer KDE to Gnome the Kubuntu beta is also out and can be found here. Kubuntu has is available with either KDE 3.5 or the shiny new KDE 4.

He has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of mail and electronic fraud. He also charged with operating a bot-net used to send out spam to a database of 150 million email addresses. Soloway has been in legal trouble before, in fact an Oklahoma ISP sued under the CAN-SPAM act and after firing his lawyer and refusing to show up to court the ISP got the default $10 million dollar judgment. For his crimes he is facing up to 26 years in jail and up to a $625,000 in fines, but since he’s broke that doesn’t really matter. Just goes to show that crime doesn’t pay especially spamming.

F-secure has noticed a trend that more malware is being spread though FTP. As most can remember when viruses and other nasties were spread through email attachments, well that’s be fairly well defeated. Then came the drive-by-downloaders which use http to transfer the infectious payload, that’s been slowing down since browsers have evolved. Now though there is a new way to become infected, through trusty old FTP. How this happens is that a user receives a spam email with some links claiming they have an offer which can’t be refused and as we all know most really can’t refuse it. So the unsuspecting user clicks the link and a ftp connection to some bot-net controlled computer is initiated and some infected files downloaded. So now there is one more thing to scan for in your emails.

I’ve been testing the latest betas of Firefox for awhile now and Firefox 3 is shaping up to be very nice in my opinion. The biggest thing is the Mozilla team seem to have started plugging some of the memory leaks. Just my rudimentary test but after having both version open for two minutes and surfing the same few pages the memory usage of Firefox 2.0.0.12 is over 63 Mb and was still climbing when I stopped. While Firefox 3 the usage hovered around 55 Mb at the end and was steady. With some basic calculations thats over an 80% decrease (please don’t hold me to these numbers just very basic tests).

Some of the new features are very nice as well. My favorite being the adaptive autocomplete address bar. What this does is based on your usage patterns of the sites you visit the most and sites you visited recently and of course by letters your typing, it shows you the most relevant sites in the autocomplete menu. Also another nice thing is the ability to save your current tab layout when you quit. So when you come back to browsing everything is just how you left it.

Firefox 3 Beta 4 can be found here.
PC Magazine also has an article about the new beta: PC Magazine

Though 30,000 pages are now up only a handful a fully complete and approved by scientists, the rest serving as placeholders that haven’t been authenticated by scientists yet. You can see the list of exemplar pages as they call them, that are fully approved, here. Shady business practices abound at Network Solutions. The domain registrar is being accused of ‘front-running’. What happens is when someone goes to the Network Solutions site and searches for the availability of a domain name Network Solutions immediately registered the name for itself. Then the company forces the user to pay outrageous fees to buy the name from them. One client in the suit said $34.99 when the same domain elsewhere would have been $9.99. For anyone who’s been burned by this practice this is welcome news. The original filer of the suit also claims that ICANN is in on the deal as well.

It appears that the disk encryption schemes used by different operating systems can be easily circumvented. Princeton Researchers have disproved a common misconception of one of the key components of a computer, that the system’s RAM loses all information stored on it as soon as power is cut from the chip. The researchers claim that the contents of the memory remain for seconds after the power is cut, and if cooled to low temperatures that that time can be extended to hours.

Princeton computer science professor Edward W. Felten, states that by using an inverted can of compressed air, a common item in most offices, you can effectively freeze the data on the chip for 10 minutes. In contrast using liquid nitrogen, not so common item in the office unless it’s a cryogenics office, the time can be increased to hours. Then the ram can be used cold boot the machine and the encryption key is still on the memory and can be used to access the encrypted disc contents.

For those who don’t know SSH - Secure SHell - is a secure way of remote administration of a server through the command line. This was first used in Unix servers but has made it’s way to Linux and Windows, thanks to open source software.

There is also a different way to use SSH, to make a secure tunnel between a client and server for transferring files. This is known as SCP. The biggest downfall with SCP is that it relied on SSH which by nature was slower because of the computation of the encryption. Now since machines have been getting more powerful, and bandwidth getting faster this downfall is prominent. So the Advanced Computing Group have made improvement to the core of SSH. These improvements were to the flow control buffers, the main bottleneck of the SSH protocol. The new implementation of HPN-SSH now defines the buffers at run-time, meaning the buffers can be increased as long as the link between the server and client is healthy.

The Advanced Computing Group claims to be able to improve the throughput by as much as 1000% just by increasing the buffer size. The group also made available patches to the popular OpenSSH software. I have yet to try this patches but as far as I can tell this looks to be very promising.

For those that don’t know Microsoft plans to stop sales of Windows XP, and force everyone into using Vista. Infoworld has a petition for those that don’t want this fate for XP. Apparently this is also the opinion of atleast 75,000 other people as well.

While I’m all for Linux and Open Source software, XP is still a good product that doesn’t deserve to die just yet. I can’t believe I just said that. Compared to the bloat of Vista XP feels downright good. It’s like that friend that really goofy and awkward yet you still hang around with them anyway.
